About This Book

This volume continues a sprawling urban melodrama that interweaves the lives of wealthy circles and impoverished neighborhoods, unfolding scandals, secret letters, betrayals, and conspiracies that expose social contradictions. Set pieces range from an opulent ball to furtive rendezvous, ambuscades, a troubled rectory, and scenes of domestic misery and legal and financial maneuvering; personal tragedies and revelations intensify tensions between compassion and revenge. Through intersecting episodes the narrative highlights hypocrisy, class injustice, and the human cost of ambition while accelerating multiple plotlines toward future reckonings.
