About This Book

A young law student assembles witness statements, a coachman's account, a physician's testimony, and a late laird's journal to explain strange occurrences at an isolated coastal estate. The documentary fragments recount the arrival of new tenants, eerie visitors, coastal incidents, and a journaled military episode in a distant mountain defile that resulted in the death of an enemy. Gradually the testimony traces how a buried grievance and traumatic memory resurface to threaten the household, blending military recollection, family secrets, and an oppressive atmosphere into a tightly constructed mystery of past deeds returning to exact a toll.
