The narrative follows a twenty-two-year-old lawyer who travels to a provincial château to advise a noble household on a lingering lawsuit; while awaiting proceedings he becomes drawn into household dynamics, witnesses a strange apparition, and learns of a water spirit whose presence complicates legal and personal stakes. Conflict escalates through courtroom strategies and a duel, as questions of honor, responsibility, and the limits of reason are tested by uncanny events, culminating in a subdued, morally attentive resolution.
When years ago the author of this volume read, with delight, the story in the original, she then decided to translate it, in order that others (unfamiliar with the language) might enjoy a similar pleasure; the work of publication, hardly begun, was interrupted by the illness and sudden death of her only daughter, and to one who in so many ways resembled the heroine of this sketch, this book is now dedicated.
