About This Book
A street newsboy discovers a stranger barely conscious in his makeshift lodging and nurses him back to health, after which the newcomer adopts the nickname Dick Box and becomes his partner selling papers. The pair contend with fierce competition, neighborhood bullies, schemes to trick or exploit them, and a violent encounter with a rival named Conroy. Episodes include lessons in reading and responsibility, a sudden illness, and a robbery affecting a kindly customer who takes an interest in the boys. Over a series of narrow escapes and small acts of courage the boys protect one another and ultimately learn the truth about the newcomer's identity.
