About This Book

An eyewitness account by a participant of the first circumnavigation recounts a detailed shipboard journal of a multi-year expedition: its preparations, sea routes, the hazardous passage through southern straits, the long Pacific crossing, encounters with island peoples, descriptions of landscapes, flora, fauna, navigation charts and practical measures, daily life, illnesses, conflicts and losses, and the outcomes of landfalls in the Spice Islands and in archipelagos of the western Pacific. The text combines mapped sketches, ethnographic notes, and navigational data, blending travel narrative with careful recording of observations useful to later seafarers and scholars.
