About This Book

A lively boys' boarding-school tale follows a group of cadets through daily routines, pranks, and preparations for a formal corps including elections and drills. Episodes range from boat races, picnics, and athletic contests to encounters with a circus and wild animals, and include mischievous punishments, a school fire, a snow burial, and a mysterious disappearance that prompts rescues and a perilous escape. Themes emphasize friendship, courage, teamwork, fair play, and the social hierarchy of school life while the plot binds episodic adventures into a cohesive coming-of-age sequence of tests and moral lessons.

Just then Stuffer burst into the dormitory, his face wreathed in smiles.

“Come to the mess-hall!” he called out. “Such a spread! I’m going to eat the meal of my life!”

“That settles it,” laughed Jack. “Hurry up, all of you. If Stuffer gets there first, there will be nothing left!”

And they rushed down the stairs pell-mell; and here let us leave them and say good-bye.
