About This Book
The work examines post–Civil War political reorganization in Georgia, tracing federal and state actions from Presidential Reconstruction through congressional Reconstruction acts and military administration. It analyzes competing policies of the Johnson administration and Congress, the operations of military governors and state administrations, the contested 1868 restoration, the expulsion of Black legislators and ensuing legislative and legal maneuvers, and the implementation of the December 1869 measures that effected final readmission. Chapters combine narrative of events, legislative and executive documents, and analysis of state government changes, with an appended bibliography and documentary notations.
