Charley, a resident who is not Catholic and recently recovered from injury, unexpectedly contributes and lends practical skill to planning the building; Rosalie watches over him while wrestling with deep personal feelings and a sense of inevitable fate. The collected funds are hidden in a tailor's wall safe under a sealed trust, but secrecy weakens as gossip spreads. The narrative follows communal piety, mutual sacrifice, practical cooperation, and the tensions between trust, discretion, and social judgment among the villagers.
