A group of four young friends piloting a motor launch down the Ohio River face mechanical failures and dwindling fuel, prompting shore excursions for supplies and game. Their voyage alternates practical problem-solving—repairing motors, hunting, and trading—with adventurous episodes: navigating heavy commercial traffic, exploring lagoons and wrecks, encountering hostile rivermen and brigands, and investigating mysterious beacons. The boys' resourcefulness, aided by an older captain's dog and a rescued bear, leads to rescues, confrontations, and the unraveling of the mystery behind three blue lights as the journey tests their courage and seamanship.
