About This Book
A richly illustrated travel and historical account of the French Riviera between Nice and Mentone, concentrating on places reached from the high coastal road. The author combines antiquarian research, local legend and personal observation to describe Roman remains, medieval fortresses, convents, and seaside towns; chapters sketch Nice's promenade and old quarter, hilltop Eze, the rock and port of Monaco, Monte Carlo's diversions, La Turbie's Roman monument, Grasse, Vence, Mentone, and smaller villages such as Sospel and Castillon. The narrative mixes topography, architectural detail and anecdote to convey landscape, history and contemporary social life.
