A restless man named Giles Ilingsworth arrives at an imposing wealthy household determined to see Leslie Wilkinson and to protect Elinor, carrying a concealed, ominous object. Public mockery and his own faltering courage threaten to derail his purpose, but he gains admission by presenting a visiting card. The narrative then follows social rituals, underlying resentments, and strategic maneuvers among members of the household and their visitors, setting in motion a tense sequence of pursuit, deception, and personal reckonings amid the trappings of power and reputation.
