The memoir follows an imprisoned narrator who endures confinement while piecing together factional intrigues among colonial leaders: jealousies and corruption between the governor, the intendant, and rival commanders; the arrival of a decisive general; and personal entanglements around a woman whose influence intensifies rivalries. Through furtive visits, overheard gossip, and reflections from his cell he traces how private vanities and cupidity undermine public defense, while scenes of social spectacle and small acts of courage punctuate the mounting political decay and imminent external threat.
