The Shores of the Adriatic / The Austrian Side, The Küstenlande, Istria, and Dalmatia

The volume surveys the Austrian side of the Adriatic, providing a regional tour of Istria and Dalmatia that blends travel narrative, architectural description, and archaeological observation. It treats ports, cathedrals, fortifications and island groups in sequence while emphasizing scenery, decorative arts, and medieval survivals. Ethnographic chapters describe local costumes, customs, folk-lore and rites such as sworn friendships and traditional blood-price ceremonies, with particular attention to the Morlacchi. Archaeological and art-historical material, including medieval goldsmith work and cathedral details, is supported by the author's plans, drawings and photographs. It concludes by comparing the two shores and noting contemporary linguistic and cultural shifts affecting local Italian traditions.
