About This Book

The story opens with an apparently harmless lodger found murdered in No. 13, a reputedly haunted house, and the police are baffled by the victim's unknown identity and the locked-room circumstances. A young barrister becomes drawn in after meeting the victim's daughter, who seeks help in discovering her father's assassin. Their inquiry threads through neighborhood gossip, hidden papers, peculiar articles of dress, conflicting testimonies, legal pleadings, traps, and confessions, as investigators piece together motives and identities until the mystery is finally unraveled.

"'Tho' winds be cold and nights be drear,
Yet love makes warm our hearts, my dear,'"

quoted Lucian, as they went up to the house. "That is not very good poetry, but it is a beautiful truth, my love."

Diana laughed, and looked up proudly into the bright face of her husband.

So they went inside, and found that Miss Priscilla had made the tea, and all were very happy, and very thankful for their happiness. In this condition, which is sufficiently pleasant, I think we may leave them.
