About This Book

On a plantation in Middle Georgia, three children seek a man reputed to understand the language of animals and learn from him that livestock and wild creatures recount their own lives. The man, notable among the workers for his bearing and rumored powers, hears stories told by a black stallion, a gray pony, a tracking dog, a white pig, and a free hen, among others. These linked animal narrations and human recollections form a sequence of rural vignettes that blend folklore and natural observation to explore themes of loyalty, survival, and the bonds between people and animals.
