About This Book

The narrative follows a roving adventurer whose life encompasses soldiering, seafaring, mercantile ventures, espionage, captivity among Moorish communities, service in an Ottoman household, and an eventual return and death in his London house. Told in an old-fashioned eighteenth-century voice, the account stitches together vivid travel anecdotes, courtroom and executional episodes, domestic sketches, and researched extracts from travel books, memoirs, and newspapers. Episodes alternate between battlefield and port, exotic courts and English society, emphasizing the era's prolonged voyages, cultural dislocation, and the blurred line between fact and embellishment in reconstructing a wildly varied career.

Transcriber's Notes:

Obvious punctuation errors repaired.

As spelling in Captain Dangerous' life was more fluid, only the most obvious typographical errors have been repaired. These are indicated by dotted lines under the corrections. Scroll the mouse over the word and the original text will appear.

Varied hyphenation was retained: antechambers, ante-chambers; atop, a-top; cheesecakes, cheese-cakes; Cockpit, Cock-pit; Footguards, Foot-guards; Gatehouse, Gate-house; nowadays, now-a-days; Shrovetide, Shrove-tide.

The text also uses servants' hall and servant's hall.
