The Test Colony

A group of human colonists arrives on an oxygen-rich world and soon encounters a small, mammal-like native species with four digits, prehensile toes, and a high level of intelligence. The discovery unsettles the colony's leadership and raises practical and ethical dilemmas about contact, cultural influence, and preservation of human social order. The narrative follows the administrator who tries to control interactions while settlers feel fascination and temptation to adapt; natural hazards such as pests and illness complicate life. Tensions between planning and unpredictability drive the colony's attempts to make a new home amid an alien yet strikingly human-like fauna.
