About This Book

A merry band of small fairies — Tiddly Winks, Tiddly Wee, Tiddly Thrift, Tiddly Cheer-Up, Tiddly Scowl and Tiddly Why — guide beginning readers through simple, graded lessons in letters, numbers, manners and daily routines. Short illustrated episodes set in a schoolroom, a picnic, gardens and play scenes use repetition and playful mischief to teach reading, counting, saving, cooperation and punctuality. Household and schoolroom objects are personified, creating lively classroom interactions and gentle moral examples. The collection is organized as brief, easily decodable stories and rhymes intended for early readers learning the alphabet, basic vocabulary and social habits.

LITTLE FAIRY MEN

The Waste Basket said, “I can count.”

The Calendar said, “See all my numbers,

“One, two, three, four,
Come in please—shut the door.”

Tiddly Winks wrote numbers.

Tiddly Wee wrote on the board.

“We are little Fairy Men,
We can count up to ten.”

The School Room Mouse looked at them.

He looked out of the Clock.

He sang,

“I can count very well,
But how far, I won’t tell.”

Tiddly Winks said, “I like to count.”

Tiddly Wee said, “I can count on Wednesday.”
