About This Book

A merry band of small fairies — Tiddly Winks, Tiddly Wee, Tiddly Thrift, Tiddly Cheer-Up, Tiddly Scowl and Tiddly Why — guide beginning readers through simple, graded lessons in letters, numbers, manners and daily routines. Short illustrated episodes set in a schoolroom, a picnic, gardens and play scenes use repetition and playful mischief to teach reading, counting, saving, cooperation and punctuality. Household and schoolroom objects are personified, creating lively classroom interactions and gentle moral examples. The collection is organized as brief, easily decodable stories and rhymes intended for early readers learning the alphabet, basic vocabulary and social habits.

A HOUSE

“Who will build me a home?” asked Jenny Wren.

“I will,” said Tiddly Winks.

“I will,” answered Tiddly Wee.

Tiddly Thrift said, “Use a cigar box.”

Tiddly Cheer-Up found a cigar box.

Skating

Tiddly Scowl said, “I cannot build a house.”

Tiddly Why said, “Why not?”

They soon made a house.

They made it out of a cigar box.

They made it for Jenny Wren.

She said,

“It is spring again, spring again,
Spring in sunshine, spring in rain.”
