About This Book

A merry band of small fairies — Tiddly Winks, Tiddly Wee, Tiddly Thrift, Tiddly Cheer-Up, Tiddly Scowl and Tiddly Why — guide beginning readers through simple, graded lessons in letters, numbers, manners and daily routines. Short illustrated episodes set in a schoolroom, a picnic, gardens and play scenes use repetition and playful mischief to teach reading, counting, saving, cooperation and punctuality. Household and schoolroom objects are personified, creating lively classroom interactions and gentle moral examples. The collection is organized as brief, easily decodable stories and rhymes intended for early readers learning the alphabet, basic vocabulary and social habits.

WHAT DAY?

“Good morning again,” said Tiddly Winks.

“Good morning to you,” sang the School Bell.

“What day is it?” asked Tiddly Winks.

The School Bell sang, “It is Monday morning.”

He said, “I must ring on Monday morning.”

Tiddly Winks said, “The children are coming.”

He said, “They are carrying dinner-pails.”

The School Bell sang,

“Hear my song, hear my rhyme
Hurry children, be on time.”
