About This Book

A merry band of small fairies — Tiddly Winks, Tiddly Wee, Tiddly Thrift, Tiddly Cheer-Up, Tiddly Scowl and Tiddly Why — guide beginning readers through simple, graded lessons in letters, numbers, manners and daily routines. Short illustrated episodes set in a schoolroom, a picnic, gardens and play scenes use repetition and playful mischief to teach reading, counting, saving, cooperation and punctuality. Household and schoolroom objects are personified, creating lively classroom interactions and gentle moral examples. The collection is organized as brief, easily decodable stories and rhymes intended for early readers learning the alphabet, basic vocabulary and social habits.

THE TOP

The Rag Doll said, “Where is Tiddly Scowl?”

When I Begin I Like to Spin

Sure enough, where was Tiddly Scowl?

He was up stairs in the Doll House.

He looked out of the window.

He said, “I want to go home.”

Just then the Top began to talk.

“I am the Top, will I never stop?
Spin, spin, spin,
With humming sound, I dance around,
Spin, spin, spin.”

Tiddly Why said,

“Why doesn’t the top stop?”

The Top answered,

“When I begin,
I like to spin.”

Tiddly Thrift laughed at that.

Tiddly Cheer-Up said, “We must say ‘Good-bye’.”
