The Travels and Adventures of James Massey
About This Book
The narrator, a learned traveller, recounts maritime voyages and repeated shipwrecks that carry him and a few companions into an inhabited, remote country whose language, institutions, and customs are described in ethnographic detail. He records probing conversations about religion with a village judge and priest, rises to favor at the monarch's court, and observes ceremonies, legal procedures, births, and funerals. Later episodes follow further sea passages, imprisonment by a religious tribunal at a foreign port, a spell of slavery, alliances with various companions, and an eventual return home. Interspersed are philosophical reflections and instructive dissertations on science, morals, and belief.
