The Very Secret Agent

Two extraterrestrial agents orbiting Mars attempt to telepathically penetrate human minds to discover the nature of a secret weapon but encounter pervasive mental shielding among scientists and workers. One alien gains entry to the mind of a factory employee who has temporarily lowered her shield to slip through controls, experiencing a stream of mundane thoughts, workplace gossip, and schedules rather than direct sensory impressions. The intruder must piece together useful information from fragmentary, emotion-tinged mental content while racing against periodic shield-boosting rituals that threaten to sever contact, highlighting limits of telepathic espionage and the gap between thought and perception.
