About This Book

The text traces the instrument's origins in the viol family and examines key design changes and technical innovations that shaped its tone and range. It surveys regional schools of playing and pedagogy—treating developments in Italy, Germany, France, Belgium and Holland, England and Scandinavia, and the Slavic lands and Hungary—and describes evolving techniques, repertoire, and compositional trends through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The work collects pedagogical methods and schools, musical examples, illustrations and portraits, and concludes with an appendix and index to support further study and reference.
