A compilation of first-hand narratives, logs, letters, maps, and memorials reconstructs Spanish Pacific expeditions under Álvaro de Mendaña and Pedro Fernández de Quiros. It recounts the second Mendaña voyage with discoveries such as the Marquesas and Santa Cruz, the death of Mendaña, and the arduous return to the Philippines; and Quiros's later expedition that located the Duff, Banks and New Hebrides island groups, established ceremonial acts of possession, and produced detailed instructions and memorials.
