The Watchers

The story follows a reformer who, convinced that a hidden alien oversight has fomented human conflict, abducts one of the covert visitors to expose their schemes. He intends to extract evidence and prevent a looming war but discovers the visitors are missionaries sent by a larger intelligence to guide emergent civilizations and are evacuating Earth. Immobilized by their technology, he observes their orderly departure and the compassion of a young female attendant, which complicates his hostility; confronted with their benign purpose, he begs to accompany them and to see the wider culture he once only speculated about.
