About This Book

A merchant-vessel voyage is recounted in which a hastily assembled crew, procured by a crimp, develops disorder and resentment that lead to mutiny; adverse weather, navigational strain, and human betrayal combine to wreck the ship while it attempts to make the Bermudas. The narrative interweaves tense scenes of conflict and survival with vivid descriptions of shipboard routine, the personalities and trades of seafaring men, and observational passages about recruitment, discipline, and daily life at sea.

Transcriber's Notes

Punctuation and spelling were made consistent when a predominant preference was found in the three volumes of this novel, or to remedy simple typographical errors; otherwise they were not changed.

Dialect and other non-standard spellings have not been changed. Examples of unchanged spelling: "befel", "mirrowed", "dose" (for "doze"), "jobbed" (for "jabbed"), "wessel" (for "vessel") "biled" (for "boiled").

Spaces before the contraction "'ll" (for "will") have been retained.

Ambiguous hyphens at the ends of lines have been retained.
