About This Book

The volume compiles contemporary reports, eyewitness testimony, press coverage, and official proceedings about the loss of a homeward-bound steamship that foundered off the Welsh coast after a violent storm. It reconstructs the vessel's final voyage and struggle with the elements, describes the hull breaking near shore and the large loss of life, and gathers newspaper articles, passenger lists, expert commentary, and adjourned inquest testimony culminating in the coroner's verdict, supplemented by addenda and later details drawn from primary sources.

I have been for the last thirty-six hours (the time allowed me) preparing this book. I have had to wade through a mass of most mournful material. The labour has certainly not been a grateful one; but perhaps my friends in the Australian Colonies will rightly appreciate the motives which have induced me to supply them with a reliable history of the Wreck.
