About This Book

A young boy sent to the Hill Country to live with family friend Johanna after his scientist father departs finds himself drawn into local traditions and stories as he searches for the true way to Christmas. Through encounters with a locked-out fairy, tales told by neighbors such as Barney and a trapper, visits to Uncle Joab, and a retelling of St. Bridget, he pieces together promises, community rituals, and small acts of generosity. Episodes include a near loss of Christmas and its recovery, emphasizing wonder, belonging, and the interplay of folk legend and everyday life.

AUTHOR’S NOTE

The author wishes to acknowledge the courtesy of Mrs. William Sharpe, who has so kindly given her permission for the adaptation of parts of Fiona Macleod’s “Muime Chroisd” for the legend of St. Bridget, told here by Johanna. The author found many fragments of the legend in the north of Ireland; but nowhere was it complete as recorded by Fiona Macleod from the Island of Iona.
