Traders Risk

The narrative alternates between alien freighters and human islanders as a captive predatory creature escapes aboard a cargo ship, killing some crew; two surviving freighters, unable to contain it, eject the animal onto a nearby oceanic planet believed uninhabited. Their discovery that the planet supports warm-blooded, land-dwelling intelligences creates an ethical crisis about whether to violate interstellar protocol to protect the natives or to preserve their cargo. Parallel human threads follow a man living among island colonists who communicates with distant authorities about scarce medical crystals and faces the threat of outside occupation. The story examines risk, moral compromise, and cultural collision.
