About This Book

The narrator, born in Fut Tûr (Fouta Toro), describes decades of Islamic study under named sheikhs, then a violent capture by an army, sale to Christian traders, and a month-and-a-half sea voyage to Charleston. He recounts successive sales, brief imprisonment, and eventual residence in the household of Jim Owen, who permitted him to read the Christian gospel. Throughout he interweaves devotional Arabic prayers and theological reflection, notes the deterioration of his native language and handwriting, and asks mercy for his imperfect composition while offering praise to God.
