About This Book

The comedy follows a young woman who, after a shipwreck, disguises herself as a male servant to enter the household of a lovesick noble; her cross-dressing sparks a tangle of romantic misrecognitions when the noble pursues a grieving countess who in turn falls for the disguised servant. Meanwhile the woman's absent twin returns, producing comic confusions and a mistaken marriage, while a rowdy circle of relatives and servants stage a prank on a pompous steward that exposes pride and folly. The play stages themes of identity, desire, social performance, and festive inversion through witty language and episodic scenes.
