Twilight

A narrator convalescing from a persistent illness rents a remote house and uncovers letters and diary fragments that revive the intertwined histories of Margaret Capel and Gabriel Stanton. The story alternates between present solitude, archival reconstruction, and the narrator’s fevered reflections, using epistolary evidence, local testimony, and a village apothecary’s observations to assemble a partial account. Themes of memory, illness, authorship, and the tension between fact and imagination are explored as the narrator’s curiosity becomes obsession, leaving certain events ambiguous and inviting readers to judge how much of the recovered narrative is documentary truth and how much is shaped by perception.
