This work surveys clothing and accessories in colonial and early republican America from the seventeenth to the early nineteenth century, tracing regional and social differences among New England, Virginia, and other communities. Chapters detail men’s and women’s garments, outerwear, headgear, ruffs and bands, coats and waistcoats, wigs and facial hair, children’s dress, and footwear, while plates and portraits illustrate styles, materials, and changes over time. Attention is given to the evolution of fashion, ceremonial and practical dress, and the cultural meanings behind garments.
