The narrative interweaves palace intrigue and personal dramas in an ancient Egyptian court, as a regent's triumphal festivities conceal conspiracies and threatened violence. A secretive witch and a scheming dwarf conspire with accomplices to ignite the royal pavilion while a young woman, abducted and bound to prevent her alarm, becomes the focal point of competing designs. Scenes alternate between public revelry and cramped, anxious interiors, and characters confront mortality, ambition, and desire for deliverance. Romantic attachments, betrayals, and questions of loyalty and fate propel the plot toward acts of deception and rescue.
