About This Book

The narrative follows an enslaved young man sold by his elder brother who becomes consumed by visions demanding blood for blood; during a violent raid he turns into a frenzied avenger, slaughtering villagers and guiding attackers, then, haunted by a dream in which his dead father and a spectral figure command him, he kills his sleeping brother aboard ship. Crew members weigh punishment against pity, but the tormented man ultimately leaps into the sea and drowns. The story examines revenge, the corrosive effects of slavery and superstition, and the ambiguous boundary between justice and atrocity in a violent, unsettled environment.
