About This Book

A physically deformed but unusually strong young noble struggles against family rejection and social scorn, seeking military renown and personal redemption. The narrative traces his rise through acts of daring: rescues, single combat, raids, and siege fighting, amid betrayals, superstition, and pandemic hardship. Episodes combine battlefield action, clever stratagems, moral dilemmas, and uncanny incidents such as phantom warriors and haunted encampments, leading to startling revelations and a final reckoning.

PREFACE

I must plead guilty to having, for the purposes of the story, placed my hero’s castle (which unhappily no longer exists) much nearer to Rennes than it actually was; but the chief events of his life are given here very much as I found them in the old French chronicles.

DAVID KER.
