About This Book

A classical French tragedy that follows a devout young woman who resists demands to abandon her faith and is ultimately subjected to humiliation and martyrdom. The drama stages moral and religious conflict through concentrated scenes of misunderstanding, coercion, and public judgment, emphasizing firm piety and inner resolve. Composed in verse with relatively spare stage directions, the piece probes the limits of theatrical treatment of sacred subjects and elicited contemporary debate over its portrayal of virtue, suffering, and authority.
