About This Book

The work traces two currents of Pacific exploration that met along the northwest American coast: an eastward push from Siberia led by naval expeditions and independent hunters, and a westward movement of English and American navigators. It follows Vitus Bering's hazardous voyages and the ordeal of castaways, then shows how sea-otter hunting and the fur trade drew Russian parties and exiles into sustained contact with the shore. It recounts lawless bands and the adventurous sortie of Benyowsky, and turns to explorers such as Drake, Cook, Vancouver, Gray, and Ledyard, surveying their voyages, hardships, and the commercial and territorial encounters that reshaped the region.
