The narrative is set in the decades after the Great Northern War, portraying border changes and daily life in a Finnish village where Russian troops are garrisoned. It depicts villagers' uneasy coexistence with occupying soldiers, shared faith, and memories of wartime atrocities, then shifts to personal drama as Maria, traveling through snow, is swept into a confrontation with Martti, a man who claims to have joined Swedish forces and seeks both redemption and her reconciliation after perceived betrayal during earlier fighting. Interwoven are preparations for renewed military action, local raids, and the interplay of loyalty, guilt, and survival in a fractured homeland.
