About This Book

A stormy night at a country hall finds an anxious squire, his parson-brother, and a calculating attorney awaiting the belated return of the squire’s son, whose arrival would forestall the transfer of the estate. Card-playing, prayers, and accusations expose debts, wounded pride, and a family rift born of alleged betrayal, while local superstition adds an ominous frame. When the clock strikes twelve the squire surrenders the deeds and, after a sudden fall following a private action with a leather box, dies before learning whether his son arrives, leaving inheritance, honor, and loyalties unresolved.
