The author combines historical background, architectural description, local legend and practical impressions, noting features such as Saxon and Norman churchwork, ruined fortifications, thatched villages and moorland landscape. Short, place-focused sketches aim to entice visitors by evoking scenery, antiquities and the everyday character of the region.
Punctuation and spelling were made consistent when a predominant preference was found in this book; otherwise they were not changed.
Simple typographical errors were corrected.
Ambiguous hyphens at the ends of lines were retained; occurrences of inconsistent hyphenation have not been changed.
Transcriber added the captions to the Frontispiece and the illustration facing page 59.
