Where the Phph Pebbles Go

An alien society is built around a popular horizon-pebble game called phph, where champions gain wealth and social power while diminutive Ground Dwellers watch in fervent admiration. Two long-time rivals contest a match that draws a rare visit from a cloistered class of intellectuals known as Thinkers; the Thinker’s choice to sit among the Ground Dwellers sparks awe, rivalry, and social friction. After the game the Thinker disappears and later summons leaders and the champions to the Far Colony, requesting phph pebbles for study, intertwining spectacle, hierarchy, and the Thinkers’ research-driven aims.
