The narrative follows characters on the prairie whose impulsive loves and moral tests produce violent confrontations, social suspicion, and inward reckonings. After a tense nocturnal episode, a young woman returns to her husband’s ranch to face accusation and public scorn while the man who defended her stands ready to enforce her rights; the husband answers with bitter rage and punitive schemes. Linked episodes trace transformations of pride, courage, and resentment, examine communal judgment and personal honor, and show how youthful passion collides with entrenched authority and harsh circumstance.
