Wenn vom Berg mit leisem Tritte
Luna wandelt durch die Nacht,
Eil' ich zu des Liebchens Hütte,
Lausche, ob die Holde wacht.
Seh' ich dort die Lampe glühen
In dem stillen Kämmerlein,
Möcht' ich, wie der Lampe milder Schein,
Spielend um die zarten Wangen ziehen.

Mit des Lichtes schönsten Strahlen
Zög' ich um mein liebes Kind,
Farben wollt' ich um sie malen,
Wie sie nur am Himmel sind;
Sänke Schlummer ihr aufs Auge,
Löschte sie des Lämpchens Schein,
Wär' ihr letzter, süßer Blick noch mein,
Und ich stürbe sanft in ihrem Hauche.

Nimmer darf ich um sie weben
Wie der Lampe milder Schein,
Doch mein Lied darf zu ihr schweben,
Darf der Liebe Bote sein.
Schwebt denn, Töne meiner Laute,
Zu des Liebchens Kämmerlein,
Wieget sie in süße Träume ein
Und dann flüstert: »Denke mein, du Traute!«
