Woman's touch

A small extrasolar survey team and their spouses establish a remote fueling and repair outpost on a barren, Earthlike world inhabited by low-intelligence, humanoid natives. Command orders specify careful charting and strict noninterference, but the wives question and push against that policy, creating tension with the men and their commanding officer. The account follows the settlers as they adapt to the bleak environment, observe the natives’ apathetic, minimally communicative behavior, and confront differing impulses to conserve resources, impose aid, or experiment, probing assumptions about intelligence, cultural responsibility, and who should decide the terms of contact.
