About This Book

A sequence of pencil drawings with brief captions presents visual studies of a historic city’s architecture and streetscapes. Plates capture medieval gates, church interiors and transepts, abbey and minster elevations, a castle tower, narrow market streets, distinctive doorways, porches, and courtyards, focusing on architectural detail, texture, and composition. Arranged as a sketch-book, the images are paired with concise observations that guide the reader around notable landmarks and convey the atmosphere of place through line, shadow, and perspective.
