Je fais suivre cet article du Catalogue, de l'abrégé d'une notice qui vient de paraître dans quelques Journaux, sur un ouvrage du plus grand intérêt pour l'Histoire de la Découverte de l'Amérique, et dont la publication est annoncée très-prochainement. Voici ce qui a donné naissance à la publication projetée de l'ouvrage en question.
La Société Royale des Antiquaires du Nord de Copenhague, ayant récemment envoyé une Expédition au Groenlande aux frais du Gouvernement Danois, pour visiter les sites des anciennes Colonies qui y avaient existé il y a plusieurs siècles, le rapport de cette Expédition a constaté: la Découverte de nombreuses inscriptions, ainsi que d'autres preuves de l'existence de ces Colonies même dès le 10e siècle. Malgré que ces recherches n'aient pas encore été terminées, il paraît que l'on avait déjà obtenu des renseignemens assez positifs pour faire disparaître tous les doutes préexistans rapport à la nature des voyages que les habitans du Nord étaient dans l'habitude de faire à la Terre-Ferme de l'Amérique, dès avant l'époque de Colomb.
La Société Royale de Copenhague, était aux dernières dates occupée à publier une Edition complète, dans les langues Danoise et Latine, des Manuscrits qu'elle avait obtenus de l'Islande, et qui d'après leurs dates remonteraient à des époques où toute l'Europe était encore ensevelie dans les ténèbres de l'ignorance. "Ces Manuscrits," dit le prospectus de la société, "renferment les témoignages les plus authentiques et les plus irréfragables, constatant que l'Amérique du Nord, a été effectivement découverte par les hommes du Nord, vers la fin du 10me siècle."--Le Rédacteur.

"C'est la découverte des Côtes de la Floride, et du Canada. On n'apprend guère par cette Lettre que la date du premier voyage de Verrazzani."--M. de Fontette.
C'est le seul document imprimé que l'on a de ce célèbre Navigateur. On le trouve en entier dans la Collection de Ramusio, ainsi que dans le 3e volume de Hakluyt. Lescarbot se contente de nous en donner simplement un sommaire.
D'après une publication récente (Progress of Discovery on the more Northern Coast of America) il paraîtrait, que l'on conserve encore dans la Bibliothèque de Strozzi, à Florence, un Manuscrit dans lequel on dit que Verrazzani donne d'une manière très-détaillée, une description de tous les pays qu'il avait visités durant son voyage. Ces détails nous apprendraient même qu'il avait formé le dessein de tenter un passage à travers les Mers de l'Amérique pour aller aux Indes. Si ce manuscrit existe réellement, on ne peut sans doute que former les mêmes voeux que l'auteur de la publication dont on vient de parler: c'est qu'il serait infiniment désirable que quelque Littérateur Italien voulût bien faire part au monde entier d'un Document aussi intéressant, en publiant ce Manuscrit de Verrazzani.--Le Rédacteur.

"Cette relation est le fruit de trois ans de séjour dans les Etats-Unis. Le tableau que l'Auteur trace de la misérable situation des Colons Français sur le Scioto, l'Ohio, l'Ouabache, n'est pas propre à encourager les émigrans de France à se transporter inconsidérément aux Etats-Unis. Il explique d'une manière très-plausible le dépérissement général des Etablissemens Français sur les Frontières de la Louisiane et du Canada, tandis que ceux des Anglo-Américains prospèrent et s'accroissent: Il trouve les véritables raisons de la différence de succès, des entreprises formées par des individus de l'une ou de l'autre nation, dans celles des moyens d'exécution et d'emploi du temps, c'est-à-dire, dans ce qu'on appelle le caractère national. "L'Auteur, Médecin et Botaniste, se rendit en Amérique et se fixa à la Jamaïque. Il fit une étude approfondie de toutes les productions naturelles de cette isle. Plumier, et il en établit quelques nouveaux. Linné n'en admit qu'un petit nombre; mais presque tous les autres ont été reconnus depuis.
