Transcriber’s Note

Hyphens appearing on a line or page break have beem removed if the preponderance of other occurrences are unhyphenated. Those words occurring midline are retained regardless of other occurrences. The following variants were retained: schoolhouse / school-house, grandchild / grand-child, eyebrows / eye-brows, evildoers / evil-doers, bedside / bed-side, headache / head-ache.

On some occasions, a word spans a line break, but the hyphen itself has gone missing. These fragments are joined appropriately without further notice here.

Errors deemed most likely to be the printer’s have been corrected, and are noted here. The references are to the page and line in the original.
