About This Book
The booklet sketches the composer’s early life and training and then offers concise, reader-facing analyses of his major works, concentrating on the symphonies with particular attention to the First Symphony’s structure, its mixture of classical models and emergent nineteenth-century traits, and the rise of the scherzo in place of the minuet. It also surveys the early piano concertos, miscellaneous piano pieces, songs and vocal cycles, chamber works and overtures, and points out recurring formal devices, orchestral effects and expressive contrasts. Brief editorial notes expand coverage of selected concertos and larger chamber and vocal compositions to give a broader view of the creative output.
